Silent Planet is a solo survival game with a heavy emphasis on narrative, that puts the player on a long dead planet, alone and with very limited resources. Only by exploring the ancient ruins of an extinct alien race and uncovering the mysteries of the silent planet, can the player hope to escape.

Silent Planet is a game born from a love of classic oldschool scifi stories and the art of British painter Lee Vincent. His otherworldly and semi-abstract land- and cityscapes evoke a sense of the alien and deeply ancient which are a fitting backdrop for the kind of somber scifi story, that is mostly about the lonely and isolated experience of dying alone in a place far from home. This game is my attempt to try and give the player this feeling of melancholic loneliness, as they move around the planet and examine the enigmatic artifacts left behind by a mysterious alien race that died out suddenly.

The game itself is a resource management survival game, in which the player must use their resources of fuel and oxygen to move around the planet, scrounging whatever resources can be found or generated, and trying to find a way to repair their damaged ship. The game board is composed of 25 cards in a grid that the player moves between. When resources run out, the player can scrap parts of their lander vehicle, losing mobility and flexibility to gain a small batch of resources. This is the central mechanic of the game; eating yourself to stay alive. Cards are also a possible source of resources, as well as other helpful items, but usually at a risk.

Silent Planet er et solo survival spil, med fokus på historiefortælling, der placerer spilleren på en død planet, alene og med meget få ressourcer. Kun ved at udforske ruinerne efterladt af en race af uddøde rumvæsner, og ved at løse planetens mystiske mysterier, kan spilleren gøre sig en forhåbning om at slippe væk.

Silent Planet er et spil der er opstået af min kærlighed til oldschool scifi historier, samt den britiske kunstner Lee Vincents malerier. Hans syrede og semi-abstrakte landskaber og mærkelige byer/borge, hidkalder en følelse af noget fremmed og oldgammelt, som jeg ser som en oplagt baggrund for den slags scifi historie, der mest handler om at dø alene på en fjern planet, meget langt væk hjemmefra. Med dette spil håber jeg på at kunne skabe denne følelse i spilleren, af melankolisk ensomhed, som de trasker rundt på den forladte planet og kigger på de kryptiske efterladenskaber, af en uddød race af mystiske væsner.

Spillet handler om overleve, ved at styre sine ressourcer. Spilleren bruger ilt og brændstof til at bevæge sig rundt på planeten, for at indsamle de få ressourcer der er at finde, og for at prøve at finde en måde at reparere deres rumskib på. Spillepladen udgøres af 25 kort i en firkant som spilleren bevæger sig imellem. Når ressourcerne løber ud har spilleren mulighed for at dekonstruere dele af sit fartøj; herved opnår de en lille smule ressourcer, men reducerer også deres mobilitet og flexibilitet. Dette er spillet centrale mekanik; at spise sig selv for at overleve. På kortene kan der også findes ressourcer, samt andre brugbare genstande, men oftest kommer dette med en risiko.

The game is nominated for its solo exploration based narrative elements where the unfolding of the story is undeniably related to the exploration of the empty and lonely planet. Your resources are scarce, the game has harsh consequences and your choices can easily get you killed – but the loneliness lures you back, just one more try!
