Trivia
- LARPs: Rubber Sword LARPing has been a big event at Vaticon for the past few years, and this year is no exception. Vaticon has access to a fantastic location for these events, and we intend to use it to its full potential. There will be games running Saturday and Sunday for all those LRP enthusiasts. So grab your armour, grab your weapons and bring them along for what will be a fantastic weekend of LRP.
- WARGAMES: Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Wargames section of Vaticon 2010. At the moment we have 2 tournaments lined up for the weekend; Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Fantasy Battle. Building on our success last year I’m hoping for an even larger turnout for 40k this year. It will be a two day tournament consisting of 3 games per day. The Rulespack is being fine tuned to perfection as we speak. The missions will consist of the ones outlined in the main rulebook. I am applying for ETC qualification status for this tournament so your scores from the tournament will earn you a place on the Irish rankings. Warhammer Fantasy Battle is back again, while a humble 4 man tournament last year, I expect it to have a giant boost in numbers this year. The timing of the tournament means it seems to be the last event before the ranking cut off date for the 2010 ETC team. If it gains ETC ranking status expect it to be one of the most hotly contested tournaments this year! I am also still tinkering with the Rulespack for this event, making sure it is up to the grade. - Tristram Hills Warmachine/Hordes This year Vaticon will be hosting a new and wondrous 35 point Mark II tournament, but be warned, this is not a game for sissies, but if you think you can handle the pain bring your army and show us what you got, otherwise, just stay home.
- CCGs: Magic: the Gathering You are a Planeswalker. With your vast library of knowledge do battle and devastate your opposition with mighty spells and by summoning powerful creatures. Struggle and triumph over them with your superior wits, strategy and power in Magic: the Gathering. Magic events running all weekend, from drafts to tournaments. So bring a deck or build one there, but don't miss it! Legend of the Five Rings Get ready to pick your weapons to fight for the glory of your Clan. Whether it is stepping into the Shadowlands to fight the evil Horde, or stepping into the vicious Courts of Rokugan, you must do your Clan proud, it's future is in your hands. Drafting all weekend, and a big tournament with big prizes, come and fight for your Clan's Honour and glory.
- BOARDGAMES: As usual the entire boardgames collection of UCD GameSoc will be available for casual play throughout the convention, as well as several organised tournaments that will take place over the course of the weekend. We encourage people to bring their own games if they wish to play something we might not have, but our collection is quite extensive, and we are sure to have something that you will enjoy.
- VIDEOGAMES: Smash Bros. Brawl: This year promises a return of the hugely popular Tír na Smash Tournament in Smash Bros. Brawl. If you think you’re good at Smash Bros, this is the perfect opportunity to show off your skills against the best players in Ireland, as well as to get involved in the Irish Smash Bros scene. Don’t miss it! Goldeneye: Time to go a little retro! And what better way to do it than to go back to the granddaddy of FPS’s: Goldeneye! At Vaticon we’ll be running a 4-Player tournament, so dig out your N64’s and get practising. Let's do this Paintball mode!!! Rockband: Battle of the Bands: It’s back! Its Rockin! It's Battle of the Bands! Form a band of four and don’t miss the epic showdowns (and shenanigans) that are sure to follow as you rock out to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers song ‘Dani California’. The highest score wins! Mariokart: Time for a time trial! Race around the track, dodging shells and other racers alike in the Crazy Mariokart on the Nintendo Wii. The track for this year is Koopa Cape race course. Modern Warfare 2: The best selling FPS is coming to Vaticon. Test your mettle against the challenging Favela level challenge! Try get the highest score in the shortest time, while dodging bullets in scenic Rio! Street Fighter 4: For the first time at Vaticon, we are pleased to be hosting a tournament in conjunction with the Irish Street Fighter community. The tournament will be following official Street Fighter rules and will be run on the X-Box 360. Bring your own joysticks, and don't forget your game faces. Free Play: If you’re not into tournaments, or if none of these games strike your fancy, not to worry! There will also be free-play on the Wii and X-Box 360 throughout the weekend.
- ACCOMODATION: UCD Campus lies 25 minutes from Dublin City centre, which means it is very close to several hostels and hotels. The hostel situated closest to UCD is the Herbert Lodge Hostel. Just 5 minutes away from the campus and rooms from 15 euro a night, this is the prime place to stay for Vaticon. Further information can be found at www.herbertlodge.com/, for booking details and prices. Dublin City has many other fine Hotels and Hostels, from An Oige hostels to 5-star Hotels, so every taste can be satisfied.
- GETTING THERE: Only 25 minutes from O'Connell Street, getting to UCD is very easy, with many buses going directly to the centre of campus and the main gate itself. These buses are very regular and can be boarded through out Dublin City centre. The following Buses can each be used to reach the UCD campus; 2, 3, 10, 11B, 46A, 46E, 17, 145 For further information check www.dublinbus.ie. UCD is also just a short walk from Sydney Parade train Station, making it even easier to access. This train station is serviced by very regular DART trains, that are a bit more reliable than Buses.
