The world is inhabited by Magisters, magical existences who live surrounded by magic and spend all of their very long lives seeking excitement in a world where pretty much everything has been seen, and every experiment has been done before.

So sometimes, they create Artifices, magical beings crafted and made, artificial beings without a purpose, in the hope that the Artifices will seek a purpose, and stumble upon something of interest. And sometimes they do.

Most of his body, his arms, his legs, his chest and stomach, were made from hay. His eyes where made from two golden bowls of blue fire, and he was driven by a small, black pearl inserted just below his heart, and by a lump of gears which made up his mind. He was an Artifice, no doubt about it. His master had sent him to wander to the very end of what was called the Very Long Road. Which was very long. He did not know what he would find along that road. Or at the end of that road. He didn’t know that he would stumble upon several travel companions. That they would be so entertaining. Or that what he would find at the end of the road, would be something very interesting indeed.
