Description
Dear Mrs. Norman,
No doubt, by now you have received full information of the untimely death of your sons, Benjamin and Frank. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies for your loss and to express my gratitude for the services your two fine sons have rendered for our great nation. They were truly brave soldiers that it has been my pleasure serving with and I regret it not being me in that plane on D-day instead of them.
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine in an attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the United States of America, and the freedom it stands for, that they died to save.
Prey that our heavenly Father may lessen the anguish of your bereavement and leave you only the cherished memories of the loved lost. The solemn cry that most be yours to have laid such a costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
Captain James Klein, 82nd Airborne division, 508th parachute infantry
Vid D-days slut saknades ca 4000 amerikanska fallskärmshoppare ur 82:a divisionen.
