Description

It’s spring, the sun is shining and the grass is growing fast on lawns and in parks.

The grass gets its green colour from the chemical chlorophyll, which through photosynthesis enables the blades of grass to reflect the colour green when the sunbeams strike them.
Chlorophyll is not a stable molecule. It needs the rays of the sun and relatively high temperatures to appear, but at the same time it is broken down by the strong sunlight. The grass blades are thus constantly producing new chlorophyll and keep their strong green colour as long as it is spring and summer. Once the days grow shorter and the sun loses some of its power, the blades have a harder and harder time replacing the broken-down chlorophyll, and the green colour slowly begins to fade.
