From Dawn ’til Dawn: Getting Ready for the Night Parade

Ogimachi Village, Gifu. During the sleepy Autumnal off-season, the cosy lives of local hengeyokai (shapeshifting animal spirits) are thrown into disarray by the tidings of an impending Hyakki Yagyō, a Night Parade of 100 Demons. Our critter/spirit friends now have little time in which to investigate and ready themselves for the impending processional mayhem. What will the hellish visitors expect as part of proper hospitality? How can disruption to the human villagers at the hands of Oni be minimised? Who might it be worth consulting or involving: village elders with faint memories of the last parade, spiritual experts such as shrine maidens or mountain men, and/or the children of the village, whose bold innocence and playful hearts may make them the best accomplices of all? Of course, henge are themselves not the most consistent of beings, ranging from benevolently circumspect to mischievous organisers of chaos, such that shared good intentions may result in rather divergent approaches to problem solving…
