Final Hours

RPG system: LARP
Participants: 10-12 players

By

✏️Keri G.

Description

You’d shipped out as elite heroes of the prestigious Betan Astronomical Survey to explore rumors of a newly-found potentially habitable planet. You left friends and loved ones and a rich life behind, but this was the job opportunity of a lifetime. Mapping the wormhole nexus and surveying a new world - it's an experience you couldn't pass up.

You made it through the wormhole safely, but as you approached the planet, an asteroid collision destroyed several solar panels and one of your landing pods, throwing you into an erratic orbit.

If you take no action at all, the ship will be drawn in to the planet’s gravitational field in a few hours, and all of you will die. Given your time frame and resources, you have only a few options. No course of action has a certainty of the whole crew surviving, but the factors and odds vary depending on which action is chosen. There’s a risk that some of you may die no matter what action the group decides to take, but making no decision will mean death for you all.

You must decide what you'll do, and the clock is ticking. You have a captain, of course, but Beta Colony is nothing if not egalitarian. Your captain has always preferred to lead by consensus, and now is no different.

This is a game about the emotions experienced in a dire emergency, and about making difficult decisions in a short amount of time. It is not about evading the decision, it is about making it.

Final Hours is a structured freeform LARP. Character details and connections will be workshopped prior to game start, with periodic game pauses for guided internal reflection for the characters. A debrief session will follow the game. _This game will be most fun for players who enjoy collaborative storytelling and enjoy internal roleplay._

No knowledge of Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan universe is needed to play this game, but it is the genre inspiration. A brief bluesheet will be provided for world context.

The format of this game was inspired by __Magpie__ by Hilary Umbreit (Thank you, Hilary!)
