Easy as Robbing a Bank

RPG system: LARP
Participants: 7-12 players

By

✏️Aaron Vanek

Description

**The robbery should have taken less than 10 minutes. Four hours later it was a media madhouse. Eight hours later it was a national event. Twelve hours later, it was history.**

Inspired by a real NYC bank robbery in August 1972 and the subsequent movie _Dog Day Afternoon_, this larp explores the issues raised from the true incident while emulating--not re-enacting--the real event. Other than the premise (spoiler! It's a bank robbery!), what happens in the larp does not have to follow what happened in the movie nor real life. Can things end differently? The first ten minutes of the larp is a scripted scene (just the actions, not the dialogue), but after that the players control their destinies. No familiarity with the film or the actual robbery expected, nor are there penalties if you do know.

This larp features minimal mechanics and (hopefully) maximum drama. Expect a serious tone with, perhaps, a few comedic elements.

Pre-generated characters provided using an emotional-based system--most characters will not have pre-set goals, but instead have feelings toward different things and people in the fiction. It is up to the player to decide how to act based on the character's emotions, and if they resolved any personal tension or dilemmas. Those with concrete goals will also know the emotional motivation underpinning the goal.

Characters have pre-determined gender, sexuality, and ethnicity, but can be played by anyone.

Two players will be rotating NPCs playing a few different characters (horde style, if you are familiar with it--a very small horde).

An in-game meal will be provided (paid for) by the GM from the hotel restaurant.

Costuming: minimal; business attire (from 1972 if possible, or just business, or just early 70's).

Rated R (18+ only) for simulated violence, strong language, adult themes, class inequality and racial tensions, LGBTQ elements including homophobia, transphobia, and homosexual/transsexual PCs and NPCs. Some characters have backstory references to rape and sexual predation.

Safety protocols such as OK check, cut and break, etc., will be enabled.
