White Buffalo (Bisonspillet) er et episk spil om prærieindianernes guldalder på sletterne i Nordamerika ca. 1700-1875. Du skal mestre brugen af heste og jage de store bisonhjorder, følge hjorderne på deres vandringer, samt udvide din stamme og dens indflydelse i konkurrence med andre stammer, imens du må imødegå de store udfordringer foranlediget af ekspansionen mod vest - nybyggere, jernbaner og den amerikanske regerings krav om traktater.

I White Buffalo tager du rollen som een af de indfødte stammer på prærien, såsom Crow, Apache, Comanche, Cheyenne eller Arapaho-stammen. Du samler kort for at jage bisonhjorder, samt for at flytte og udvide din stamme.

I spillets tidlige fase er der frit spil på prærien og masser af bison, men snart mødes stammerne af alvorlige udfordringer fra ekspansionen mod vest af nybyggere, jernbane-kompagnier og den amerikanske regerings krav om traktater, som ikke alene gør livet vanskeligt og beslutningerne sværere, men ultimativt også truer med at udrydde bisonhjorderne og dermed stammernes livsgrundlag og nomadiske kultur.

Bisonjagten giver dig mulighed for at tilføje nye tipi-kort til din stamme, der dels giver dig de points du skal bruge for at vinde, men også giver styrke til de kort du spiller af samme farve. Spiller du flere kort i samme farve, får du en bonus på dine moves og jagt-actions. Omdrejningspunktet for spillet er posen, der trækkes fra under jagten, som langsomt “forurenes” med “dårlige cubes”, der dels reducerer jagtudbyttet, men også truer med at udrydde bisonerne.

White Buffalo remixer kendte elementer fra f.eks. Ticket to Ride (samle farvede kort), Deep Blue (flytte rundt på et bræt, og trække farvede cubes fra en fælles pose), samt bisonhjordernes bevægelser efter hver jagt, der foretages som når man flyttter kuglerne i et spil Kalaha. Spillets episke historiske fortælling om udryddelsen af bison og undergangen af den kultur, der var afhængig af den, kan mærkes når man spiller spillet. Man får også en ærefrygt over prærieindianernes store bedrifter - deres mestring af heste, bisonjagten og deres nomadiske livsform i en tid med store forandringer.

Take on the challenge of the great plains tribes of North America ca. 1700-1875. In this epic game, you must harness the power of the horse and hunt the great bison herds that roam the great plains. Expand your tribe and influence, and face the challenges brought on by the westward expansion of settlers and railroads, and treaties with the US government. Watch out for how the extermination of the bison will change your way of life!

In White Buffalo (Bisonspillet), you take the role of one of the great plains tribes, such as the Crow, Apache, Comanche, Cheyenne or Arapaho. Players take turns playing cards to move their tribe, hunt bison herds and expand their tribe. To win, you must build the tribe with the most different symbols on your tepee cards.

In the early game, you have great freedom to roam the 10 territories of the great plains. Soon, you will meet the challenges that arise from the westward expansion of settlers, the US Army and railroad construction companies. These elements will make life more difficult, and will ultimately lead to the demise of the great bison herds and the culture of the tribes.

To follow the herds, you need horse cards. To hunt, you need hunter cards. If you play more cards of the same color, you can make a stronger action. The hunt enables you to add new colored teepee cards to your tribe. These earns you the symbols you need to win, but also make your card plays stronger, as each teepee card counts as one additional card of that color.

White Buffalo remixes elements known from games such as Ticket to Ride (collecting colored cards), Deep Blue (chasing around on a board and bagpulling from a common bag) and Mancala (movements). The game’s epic historical narrative about the ecological extermination of the bison and the destruction of the culture that depended on it, is felt by you as a player when you play. You also get a sense of awe of the accomplishments of the great plains tribes - their mastery of their horses, the hunt and their nomadic way of life, during a time of great changes.
