Nanjing, China, 1856.

As God once sent his firstborn son to save mankind, so has He again sent another son to return the Chinese people to the right path. The Heavenly King, son of God and younger brother of Christ, has proclaimed that he and his followers shall slay the wicked that led China astray and build a new Eden for the righteous. Tens of millions have joined his cause, and for six years the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom has fought what will end up as the bloodiest civil in human history. But could the Heavenly Kingdom's greatest threat come from within?

In *Eden on the Yangtze*, players assume the roles of the Heavenly King Hong Xiuquan's inner circle at the height of the ill-fated Taiping Rebellion, as these characters navigate a tangled web of secret plots and hidden trysts. The inner circle contains a multitude of personalities, ranging from true believers to cynics, from romantics to power-seekers… and maybe even someone seeking to overthrow the Heavenly King and take the throne for themself.

*Eden on the Yangtze* is centered around the theme of doomed aspirations and exploring interpersonal relationships in the face of the inevitable. As such, many of the characters have semi-predetermined endings and goals that they will inevitably fail at.
