Beskrivelse

The Stone Town port in Zanzibar has an adventurous reputation. It is the threshold between Europe and Africa. It was, until recently, the largest outlet for slavery. It is a port unlike any in the world and the Sultan is the ultimate authority in the land. That is how it might appear, but word has it that the Sultan is constantly torn between opposite factions and opposite internal desires. It is said that he equally loves and fears his family. It is said that he embraces progress, but refuses to have it interfere with tradition. It is said that he will do anything for Zanzibar's independence, but has already traded much of it away. And yet it is said that history has not seen a finer Sultan, nor a stricter ruler. But it is June 25th, 1876, and Stone Town is unprepared for the events that are unfolding. First, this morning, an American whaler called the Catalpa tied up along the central docks. This is hardly unusual since William Smith, known as Captain Zanzibar, is known to take in any manner of American ship for trading reasons and plain gossip. But there is something askew about this ship. The crew has a worried look to them, and a handful look as though they had just risen from their graves. They quickly went with Captain Smith and desperate exchanges could be heard from the back of the Cafe American. Then, unexpectedly, an enormous hot air balloon swept into town from over the northern jungle. It flew low and quite fast. Soon, it lowered itself and landed roughly. The balloonist, as it happens, is a women, one Anne Rochester from Salisbury, England. She claims to be an adventurer flying longitudinally around the globe. She seems boisterous and in good spirits, despite her claim that her equipment needs repair. But the final surprise is the British steamship that settled itself a mile off coast. The British Ambassador to the Sultan, Sir Bartle Frere insists that no such ship was expected. The reports that it is heavily armed come as a surprise to him. Mere, moments ago, a skiff from the ship reached the harbor. The captain of the boat, Robert Hamlin, immediately disembarked and demanded from Frere the fugitives sailing aboard the Catalpa. As Frere and Hamlin began raising their voices, Captain William Smith and his right hand man, Tippu Tip poured from the cafe with a dozen other armed mercenaries. Smith explained that the men of the Catalpa were under his care now and they were not to be disturbed. Bartle convinced the steamship Captain to bring his men and their guests to the British Embassy attached to the palace and sternly warned Captain Smith to respect the rights of all subjects to the crown. Every islander is alert and nervous. The British Empire has been threatening to take control of Zanzibar for years and the threats hinted at violence. Rumors are spreading that the Sultan and his court are discussing the possibility of war. The town is buzzing with speculation. Who were those men on the Catalpa? Will the steamship fire on the town? What will happen if Captain Smith and his small army attack the British? Who is this balloonist and the many other foreigners that appeared in the recent weeks? Did someone say the Ambassador from France is dead? One way or another, the next twenty-four hours will shape your future and this town, forever.

Vengeance in Zanzibar is a history-based LARP where players take on the roles of the political prisoners, rescuers, pursuers, colonialists, and Zanzibari. Join in the struggle for justice, freedom and true love in this four hour, theater-style game.
