Gaelcon (2010)

Dato: 22. - 25. oktober 2010

Del av: Gaelcon

Om kongressen:

I envy the Director who can claim the hardest thing was writing his opening speech. Either they’re a bone-fide genius or an eejit that was led about by his Deputy Director through the strategic sliding of Hot Wheels cars from room to room for the better part of 10 months. But, lacking a certificate of cleverness or a surprisingly large collection of toy cars, I have to be honest and say this bit’s easy.

My first Gaelcon, 2002 (not counting the 6 hours I spent at Gaelcon 2001 missing the first slot, drinking and annoying my GM, and then buggering off about dinnertime to play Poker), was, well, huge. Being on the other side eight years later, having staffed, written, attended as an “Allied Director”, committeed, and now directed, well, its no smaller. Just cause you’ve your nose pressed against the elephant and can see every crease in its skin, doesn’t make the elephant any damn smaller.

Anywho, this year, we’ve tried a few new things. Kudos to those reading this on smartphones and laptops. We’re not skimping on paper costs, we’re saving a few trees. We’ve also tried tyvek wristbands for attendees, safer and comfier and most importantly less likely to get into your sandwich with the slightest breeze. We’ve changed our tack on CCGs and done our best to make Wargames what you, the punter, wants.

The big thing is we’ve made this Gaelcon national. The committee this year represents as many cons as we could muster under one roof, with 10 directors and plenty of diverse experience. Gaelcon is unique in that it can draw from gaming societies from all around Ireland, and in fact its stronger when it does so. Before Gaelcon 2010 was anything more than a calendar date, people were offering support to make this con awesome, and I’m thankful for everyone who contributes, and to everyone who just comes to have fun.

An Irish Gaming con is not a trade show:Its a céilí with dice.
