Description

I hope this letter finds you well and that you are not finding your time in Ireland to be too wearisome. I write to request a boon there has been a terrible tragedy here at Castlecomer house and I would ask that you could come visit. Do you remember little cousin Jacky? John Jack O’Neill? He was a distant relative on my mothers side. He came to visit with some English friends of his over New Years, they seemed to be having a good time and he was in good sprits. Oh it is too unbearable to write this down, but dear dear Robert they found him drowned not three days ago, his body was pulled out of a hole in the ice in the lake by Liam the gamekeeper and now rests in the church while we wait for permission to bury him. The police say that it was a simple suicide or accident and will do no more, but he was a strong swimmer and his friends say that he did not appear to be depressed. They say that the last time they saw him he was heading for bed. Strange things have also been happening in the house with locked doors being found open and noises heard late at night! I am scared John, please hurry as once the weather clears Jackys friends will leave and you will not be able to question them about the night he disappeared, I also don’t like being here while I don’t know what has happened, especially with father still away in the colonies.

Your dear friend,
Constance Mary Butler
