Description

Sweden, the Middle Ages. The Crusades rage across the seas, while at home the Black Death decimates high and low alike. Is there any rhyme or reason to who lives and who dies? Can a world filled with such unending misery truly be ruled by a benevolent deity, as the Church teaches?

This game is based on the movie and opera of the same name. It is a somber, but not hopeless, structured freeform game in the Nordic tradition. It’s also heavily inspired by the tabletop RPG Witch: the Road to Lindesfarne. The four-hour time-slot includes room for an introductory workshop and a debrief at the end.

Content notes: Death (both the concept and as an embodied character), plague / pandemic, religion, nihilism, accusations of witchcraft. There is a baby (represented by a plushie) in the game, but no matter what else happens, the baby will not die.
Content Warnings

Participant Communications

Casting is done on-site along with pre-game workshops to establish tone and safety. Character sheets are extremely brief. Total reading for the game is around 2 pages max.

If there are six players, then the facilitator will also play the role of Death. If there are seven, then one of the players needs to play Death, but be aware that it is a very GM-like role.
Physical Restrictions
There is one stationary scene that is played in pitch darkness. This is overall a very low-physicality LARP.
